Health, Wealth And Happiness For The Over 50s

Health Wealth and Happiness, it isn’t much to ask for in life is it? ? – and by the age of 50 you would think we might have found the way.  Most of us reading this will have reason to be thankful for what we have in life but it is the human condition to ask for more.

If you are man aged 50 this year you can expect to live another 32 years and a woman enjoying her 50th birthday in 2010 can expect to see in the new year for 2045. The gap is closing by the way – men’s health for some reason is improving faster than women’s and both sexes can expect to live three extra years longer for every ten years they live!

I don’t know about you but I only want those extra years if I am fit, financially secure and happy to be here. So what are you and I going to do to make sure we enjoy 30 plus years of abundant good health,  wealth and happiness?

Of the three, health wealth and happiness health is the key 

I don’t know if you agree but it seems likely to me that of the three wishes  health wealth wealth and happiness wealth and happiness will be far more likely to come our way if we enjoy good health.  I am not talking about early death here just feeling great and having enough energy to enjoy each day to the full.

The greatest health risk by far for both men and women between 50 and 65 is cancer. After 65 it switches to heart disease and for both conditions experts say that the biggest single thing we can do to reduce the risk of both is to maintain a healthy body weight.

Of course we are so well informed today that we all know this. We all know that changing our diet to reduce red and processed meat, taking regular physical activity, eating more fresh fruit and vegetables and enjoying alcohol in moderation is the key to a full, active and long life.  So why is obesity the fastest growing cause of ill health worldwide today?

After diet the second greatest risk factor for cancer is our day by day environment at work and at play.  Smoking tobacco,stress and anxiety, the sun, radiation, asbestos and workplace risks all play their part. And of course some of these can be avoided and some can’t. Scientists are agreed though that they contribute to the risk and if you want to improve your chances you should look at your life style and take the measures you can take.

It’s not rocket science – we are eating too much of the wrong foods – our bad habits and sedentary life styles are killing us, slowly and painfully. For many our old age will be slumped in a chair for years on end wearing a diaper and being fed slop on a spoon. Do you want that?  I don’t.  We know what to do so why don’t we do it?

There are things we can do to ensure health wealth and happiness.  By getting the right information and with the right inspiration we can enjoy good health, financial and emotional abundance well into a comfortable old age.
