Its Christmas again! Do you hate general knowledge games; avoid them whenever you can; claim you have a headache or offer to make the tea whilst the others play? It’s Christmas time and I hate Trivial Pursuits!!!

I used to think that everyone who was able to answer the questions in pub quizzes was soooo clever and that I was the one who was a complete klutz; had no memory rentention, no education or just no sense.
Perhaps you’ve played those games with the type of person who seems to look down their nose at you or even refuses to have you on their team (is it a game or is it a war???). Maybe you’ve been made to feel small or slow-witted. Well I am here to help you.
Fact gatherers
Sorry, I can’t help you answer any of the sports questions and I know little about history and less about geography but what I can tell you is that there are various types of intelligence in the world and the hand you’ve been dealt didn’t include a detailed memory of lots of irrelevant facts.
Let’s think about thinking. There are those who are detailed thinkers and those who are conceptual thinkers (and you may be a mixture of both but then you’ll probably hold your own at Trivia).
Detailed thinkers are great at organisation, planning, controlling – I say ‘great’ but the thin end of this particular wedge is a control freak who wants everything their way. The overly perfectionist type who is never wrong – it’s always someone else’s fault. The up-side of these qualities is that they get the job done and in record time and accurately.
Conceptual thinkers
So, back to you and I – conceptual thinkers. We’re better at creativity; at seeing the bigger picture; at understanding both, or all, sides of the story; at being spontaneous. This particular wedge has a thin end too – conceptual thinkers in the extreme never settle to anything, constantly move from one idea to another and sit on the fence. On the plus side they are the Walt Disney’s of the world in that their creative flair gives the organisational types something to organise and we certainly tend to have better relationships because we’re more open to hear all views … but we’re rubbish at trivial pursuits.
Merry Christmas
Bee
